Glenstal Woods & Abbey and Slieve Felim Way

The Slieve Felim region is an area between Limerick City, Nenagh, Thurles, and Tipperary – and so called because it is dominated by the Slieve Felim Mountains. It is a place of quiet beauty and natural rural charm.

We start from the village of Murroe (Moroe) about 30 minutes by car from Killaloe.

This loop is part of the network of National Looped Walks and is marked using the standard purple National Looped Walk directional arrows.

The trail consist in 100 % well maintained forestry tracks and gives fantastic views into north Co. Limerick, South Tipperary and Keeper Hill Mountain.

You'll also cross creeks with crystal clear waters and stunning layers of soil where turf is evident.

The woods near the Trailhead are loaded with Rhododendron which in summer are spectacular.

Beautiful indeed but we need to mention that this tree was imported in Ireland originally to decorate gardens. Unfortunately, the growth went out of control and now threatens native ecosystems and species.

Rhododendron can form very dense thickets and out-compete native plants for space and resources, especially for sunlight.

During the walk there are some excellent resting oportunities for a break in complete silence.

After about 9 km we reach the highest point (350 m) where the views of Keeper Hill are breathtaking.

Short after this point the track joins the Slieve Felim Way which will lead us back to the Trailhead.

Towards the Glenstal Abbey

Glenstal Abbey was built in the 1830s for the Barrington family. It was designed as a castle in 12th century style. It became an abbey in 1957.

Visitors are welcome to Glenstal Abbey. You can walk in the extensive grounds and in the seventeenth-century terrace garden, participate in the community’s worship (at set times throughout the day), visit the Icon Chapel (by arrangement) and browse in the Abbey Book and Gift Shop.
